PLANTBOTTLE FACT SHEET
- PlantBottleTM packaging is a PET plastic package made with up to 30 percent of its material derived from plant material. This redesigned plastic beverage package represents a significant step in the journey to becoming the future of recyclable bottles of the Future.
- Ultimately, the goal is to develop recyclable plastic bottles made completely from non-food, plant-based waste material – turning waste into a resource.
- Using plant-based material to replace a portion of the petroleum used in PET plastic allows The Coca-Cola Company and in Canada, the Coca-Cola System, to reduce the use of non-renewable resources.
- We are conducting lifecycle analysis research into the Carbon Footprint of PlantBottle package. Preliminary research indicates that from the life cycle – growing of the plant materials through to the production of the resin – the carbon footprint of the PlantBottle packaging is reduced. We are continuing our research into this important area.
- PlantBottle packaging is 100 percent recyclable, just like traditional PET plastic. It is recyclable by design, not biodegradable, so that it works in today’s existing recycling infrastructure.
- PlantBottle packaging has the same performance as traditional PET plastic bottles; there are no differences in shelf life, weight, appearance or functionality compared with traditional PET plastic bottles.
- A variety of products, including Coca-Cola, Sprite, Fresca and DASANI beverages will be in Western Canada in the PlantBottle package beginning in December and for the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic Games.
- Within Canada, the PlantBottle will be used in Richmond, B.C. and Calgary, Alberta Coca-Cola Bottling Company manufacturing facilities.
- PlantBottle packaging is currently rolling out in Denmark with Coca-Cola, Coca-Cola Light and Coca-Cola Zero products in 500mL and 2L sizes. And for select markets in the Western United States, including Seattle, San Francisco and Los Angeles, PlantBottle packaging will be used for sparkling brands and DASANI in several sizes, starting in January.
- Future launches are being planned in other markets, including Japan and Mexico and for China’s Shanghai Expo in 2010.
- Most PlantBottle beverage containers will be identified by on-package messages and in-store point of sale displays.
