Hometown: Langley, British Columbia

Carrying Torch: Lone Butte
Torchbearer number: OTR091-040

Torch Relay Segment: January 28th, 2010

Age: 34

Torchbearer Story:

Calvin Daling’s vision for living actively is not a series of events, but a life encompassing experience. He has grown up on a baseball field and loves seeing others experience the joy of sport. So, when his softball league needed someone to ensure its long term success, Daling was more than willing to help. He is now the president, scorekeeper and webmaster for his softball league, consisting of 9 teams with approximately 150 players. When Daling took over, the league was down to 4 teams and close to shutting down. Since then, he has tried to implement consistency, professionalism and ensure a fun experience for everyone involved. He has also implemented rules that promote inclusiveness, encouraging people to participate who would not normally compete. Daling is an avid runner, too. He has just completed his second half marathon and will soon run his third in Victoria. He has encouraged others to run and extend themselves physically. He does this by encouraging people to register for races long in advance. Daling believes that when people have goals they are more likely to succeed.

NAME: John Forstrom

Hometown: Vancouver, British Columbia

Carrying Torch: 100 Mile House

Torchbearer number: OTR091-043

Torch Relay Segment: January 28th, 2010

Age: 48

Torchbearer Story:

John Forstrom’s story begins one day in the early 1990s. He had decided to ride his bike to work. This was a hassle. He was lawyer and worked at a big law firm. He was expected to act and dress like a professional. He also sweated a lot, but, luckily for him, there was a shower in his building. As a result, Forstrom went ahead and planned his first bike ride to work when there was good weather and there was a casual dress day at work. While he enjoyed the experience, it was two weeks before he rode his bike again to work. He enjoyed that too.

Over the ensuing weeks and months, Forstrom made a number of changes in other areas of his life, which all made it easier for him to ride his bike to work. He installed a wardrobe in his office, so he could change into his work clothes at the office. When he bought a house, Forstrom chose a neighbourhood with a good bike route to downtown. When he set up his own law firm, he looked for a building with shower facilities. Forstrom never made a conscious decision to give up driving to work. It just kind of happened. He now wonders if he rode his bike to change his life, or changed his life to ride his bike. For Forstrom, it works either way.
