Coca-Cola Torchbearers – January 5th

Name: Joe Landreville

Hometown: Winnipeg, MB

Carrying torch in: Duglad

Torchbearer #: OTR068-063

Physical activity was instilled in Joe Landreville at an early age and has had a positive impact on his personal development and outlook on life. Coaches encouraged Landreville to participate to the best of his abilities while playing fair and respecting others. His goal was simply to participate, but when he found a sport where he excelled he trained harder with increased focus. Drive and determination allowed Landreville to reach his potential, eventually becoming a junior Canadian champion in weightlifting. Involvement in sports has helped define the person Landreville is today.

Following active competition, Landreville felt it was time to give back as a volunteer. Over the years, he has coached dozens of weightlifters from the grass roots to the elite levels of competition. The opportunity to instil in them the values of participation, commitment and goal setting and being able to watch them develop both physically and mentally has been rewarding for Landreville.

Now with a family of three small children, active living is still at the forefront of Landreville’s life. He realizes he has the greatest influence on his children and that it is important that he lead by example. Regular exercise and a proper diet ensure his family stays healthy and fit. Landreville and his wife also encourage their children to try new sports and learn the values associated with organized sports and active living.

Name: Jennifer Hamilton (Coca-Cola Torchbearer)

Hometown: Winnipeg, MB

Carrying torch in: Winnipeg

Torchbearer #: OTR068-101

Jennifer Hamilton believes she represents the thousands of mothers who stand by their children’s sides, encouraging them to live their dream. These mothers are up at the crack of dawn to pack lunches, mend sports equipment and transport young athletes to far corners of the city to play sports. They are on the sidelines in the pouring rain, freezing temperatures, blistering heat, cheering on their sons and daughters. They volunteer on sports committees, take coaching courses and play sports.

Hamilton believes these mothers do this to inspire their children to keep active and lead a balanced life; to nurture the body and the mind with fitness and new challenges; and to explore teamwork, discipline and goal setting. From mini soccer, hockey, running races, adventure races, cycling, inline skating to elite speed skating and orienteering, Hamilton has done it all. Her children are now young adults and can drive themselves to their sports events, book their flights to out of country competitions, but she remains their supportive cast. Hamilton encourages them to keep active in the sports they love.
