Coca-Cola Torchbearers – January 9th

Name: Jasmine Jackman

Hometown: Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan

Carrying Torch: Moosomin

Age: 27

Torchbearer #: OTR072-019

Jasmine Jackman began playing organized and individual sports at the age of 3 and continues to play basketball, fastball and golf in her local community league. Growing up, active living was a choice and she owes a lot of it to her life experiences. She has met several of her closest friends through sport, received scholarships, continued her post secondary education and stayed healthy. She has also learned how to increase her endurance, flexibility and strength by playing volleyball, badminton, track and field, basketball, fastball, dancing, swimming and figure skating.

As a recreation programmer for the city of Moose Jaw, Jackman promotes several active lifestyle initiatives such as “in motion, participation and girls on the move.” She also creates programs that require light to maximum effort such as walking groups and kickboxing. Coaching has also been a large part of Jackman’s life. Over the past 10 years, she has had the opportunity to coach ages three to eighteen in fastball, basketball, volleyball and golf. She coaches Special Olympic track and field, too. Jackman has inspired and actively engaged thousands of people in active living and hopes to continue doing so for years to come.

Name: Oksanna Zwarych

Hometown: Regina, Saskatchewan

Carrying Torch: Yorkton

Age: 48

Torchbearer #: OTR072-036

As a teacher and an avid promoter of health and wellness, Oksanna Zwarych believes active living is not a project or a resolution, but a way of life. Much like eating, breathing and sleeping, she believes you need to keep an active lifestyle for the overall positive health of your body.

When lecturing people on the qualities of getting active, Oksanna believes in modeling. Oksanna started a fitness program, which involves the entire high school taking daily walks of 30-40 minutes. She has even replaced the video game consoles in her school with ones that need physical input. Some of the students in her school work so hard at these games that they are sweating by the time they finish.

Oksanna has also instituted theme days at her school, such as Hockey Day. She brought in hockey players to talk about healthy lifestyle choices and she prepared hockey themed activities in the gym. While she has a very limited budget for these promotional activities, she has found that you do not need expensive equipment to motivate students. For example, she has taken students for walks and played basketball and horseshoes with them, all highly enjoyable activities.
