Coca-Cola Torchbearers – November 17th
Karey-Beth Delorey
Hometown: Larry’s River
Carrying Torch: Tracadie
Karey-Beth Delorey is carrying the Olympic Torch in honour of her skating coach, Connie Frazee. The date Delorey is running is the first anniversary of her death. She carries the torch for all skaters that hold the Olympic dream.
Delorey also carries the torch as a family tradition. Her uncle carried the flame in Langly, BC during the relay for the Calgary Olympics in 1988. She is excited that members of her family were able to carry the torch on both the east and west coast of Canada.
Jeff Irving
Hometown: Bedford
Carrying Torch: Antigonish
Jeff Irving looks forward to every Wednesday. This is when he volunteers with the youth group at his church. Each week approximately 65 teenagers come out to socialize and engage in activity. They have a full gym where they often play volleyball, basketball, soccer and dodgeball. Also, they occasionally take hiking and camping trips.
By being involved in this group, Irving stays active without even trying. He encourages others to take similar small steps to increase activity in their daily routines.
Stephen Mills
Hometown: Upper LaHave
Carrying Torch: New Glasgow
Stephen Mills, or the recycle police as his wife calls him, works hard to ensure all the garbage in their house gets sorted properly. As a member of the RCMP for 31 years, he takes all steps he can to live green and encourage others to do so. Through their recycling efforts, Mills’ family has been able to reduce their garbage to only one bag every two weeks.
Mills and his wife have been actively involved in the Relay for Life for the last six years. Mills has been the logistics chair and his wife the volunteer chairperson. In total, the relay has raised over $750,000 for cancer research. The work of Mills and his wife has inspired many of their community members to become involved as well.
Jill Trinacty
Hometown: Berwick
Carrying Torch: New Glasgow
Jill Trinacty understands the importance of active living for Canadians. Since she was young she was involved in soccer, volleyball, badminton and hockey. In university she played varsity rugby. Trinacty is a certified fitness instructor and active living coordinator. She ran a morning boot camp and an after school program to increase physical activity. Trinacty feels rewarded watching people reap the benefits of incorporating physical activity into their lives.
Trinacty aspires to be a physician and sees the importance of counseling patients on the importance of active living in managing and preventing disease
Don Adams
Hometown: Halifax
Carrying Torch: New Glasgow
Don Adams has been a coach for over 30 years in lacrosse, softball and football. He shows the children that there are rewards in being active and finding their strengths and abilities. Adams believes being involved in a team gives children the opportunity to grow individually within a group.
Adams has been a coach, leader, friend, mentor and father figure to his young athletes. His love for staying active has showed through and touched each one on a special level.
Due to osteoarthritis and knee surgery, Adams is forced to wear two custom braces. However, staying active is what is keeping him out of a wheelchair. He believes that by carrying the Olympic Torch he can show the kids the only limits in life are those you set for yourself.
